I felt like designing some new characters that weren't human and humanoid and this is what I came up with. I'm not entirely happy with how they look but I'll work out the kinks later.

Today I decided to practice facial expressions. And doing this showed that I need to practice drawing a character the same way twice too ^^;

Hands and Feet Practice

I needed to get some practice with hands and feet (an area I'm a bit weak in) so I looked up some good poses from Avatar: the Last Airbender, and did my best to copy them (....not with tracing of course). Hopefully I'll be able to remember how it's done the next time I draw hands and feet from memory.

I thought I would practice drawing other people's characters (an important skill when working in the animation industry) and I decided to go with two of my favourite characters, Mai and Ty Lee, from one of my favourite cartoons, Avatar the Last Airbender. This sketch is far from perfect, but I don't think I did too bad.

I find that I get a bit intimidated when it comes to doing backgrounds so I decided to challenge myself today by doing a (sketchy) Chinese Palace. I was surprised to see that it didn't turn out too bad. If I had actually taken my time and used a ruler I think I could have done something worthy of the industry.

These are a few pieces from our new life drawing assignment. The idea is to take a fully rendered life drawing and simplify it. This is one of the first assignments (in life drawing) that I've really excelled at.

Thank You Picture

This was just a little thank you sketch I made for a woman who helped our animation class out with a drive-in fundraiser we were holding. In fact, we couldn't have had it without her since she made the screen. I used the characters Bolt and Dug for this since two of the movies we showed were Disney's Bolt and Pixar's Up.

These characters are from one of my favourite cartoons from when I was a kid, the 90s version of Flash Gordon. I realize now how corny that show was but I still like the characters, specifically Thundar and Talon.

I know what you're thinking....I already did the cowboy thing. Well, this stuff is more of a tribute to my favourite cartoon, The Legend of Calamity Jane. I didn't want to put it with the other Western stuff because I can't take credit for the character designs here.

This is just a couple of cowboy sketchs I did last year. Most were for Tara's drawing jam but even if that wasn't the theme, I probably would have done a bunch a cowboy stuff anyway; I'm a bit of a Wild West freak.

Elementals

These are some more early characters I created that have also undergone many, many, many appearance alterations. In fact, when I started there had only been four of them. I guess I don't know when to stop. The idea behind these characters is that I wanted to create my own superhero team...one that is all girls because far too often the superhero world is too male dominated. So, here is a team of super sisters each with the power over one element (some real and some made up). They are: Keegan (fire/red), Raelyn (water/blue ), Demi (earth/brown), Era (air/purple), Orli (light/yellow), Yuka (flora/green), Nilda (metal/grey), Circe (shadow/black) and Jaci (gravity/pink).

Before anyone asks, these are not furries. This is my attempt to make anthropomorphic characters (and I like big cats, so sue me). These designs were based off a story idea I had. And if I do say so myself, these are some of my better character designs. From left to right they are: Dakota (lioness), Nevada (tiger), Virginia (panther), Indiana (cheetah), Florida (cougar), Arizona (lynx) and Alaksa (snow leopard). There's a reason they are named after states...but I don't feel like getting into that now.

Pellonia

This is one of my oldest characters, Pellonia, that I have been working on since before I even came to art school. She has undergone many appearance changes...this is the latest version, complete with her little sidekick Bo (don't ask me what he is supposed to be...I don't even know).

Okay, since I've never done this blog thing before I thought I should start with some of my better work. This is a logo I designed for the Saint John Fire Department's new ladder truck, The Bronto. Eventually this is supposed to be put on a t-shirt with the maltese cross around it. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished product.
